Clairely Now at the U-Strummit!

Well, that was super fun.

On October 4th, I had the wonderful opportunity to sing at the U-Strummit at the Gryphon D’Or in NDG.

Hey everyone!

This is my newest (and first) music video for my first single from 18.93 Metres of my Fibre.

It was all filmed at Shoestring Studios in October by yours truly. Many thanks to J Stevens for letting me slice and dice his Wapsipinicon peach tomatoes!

Enjoy! And let me know what you think.

Gryphon D’or Tearoom October 7th @ 8 pm!

It’s going to be awesome – Clairely Now and J Stevens?  Quite the lineup!

See you there.

shaika tomorrow.

Hey everyone!

This one’s a quickie, but I want to tell you all about my show tomorrow night at Shaika in NDG.

See you then!

the trick of it.

I took all day yesterday to record three songs. That’s right, about six hours to record about eleven minutes of usable material – and I’m not even sure about four minutes of that.

It’s pretty easy to drive yourself nuts with this kind of stuff. My trick is to assume that every rendition of the same song is of no consequence, even though I really have to get this done this week. It’s how I help myself relax, and even then, sometimes that doesn’t work. What if the cats get bored and start yowling? What if someone’s baby decides to start wailing just in front of my window? And then I tell myself that if the cats and babies in the neighbourhood decide to practice the Carol of the Bells together, then I can just try again tomorrow. It’s funny how I keep believing it.

That trick is sort of like something one of my friends taught me recently. He says that he can manipulate time by simply lying to himself; try it yourself. The next time you catch yourself saying, “Oh no, it’s only 6:30…” stop and say, “Hey! It’s 6:30 already!” And the time warp begins.

If all else fails, look at this picture.

Then, imagine how bad it would feel to be presented with a piano and have no thumbs.

the NDG arts walk.

What’s that?

Oh! Now I can hear you!

Yesterday, J Stevens and I carted up our stuff and brought it all down to the NDG Arts Walk.

This was our table.

We had a special deal where each CD was $5, and some special Shoestring Studios Simple Fruit salsa, which I had made that morning.

We used organic Wapsipinicon peach tomatoes from the garden and organic parsley from our window box as well as organic Quebec field tomatoes, some purple, yellow, and green onions, jalapeno peppers and pineapple to make that delicious and sweet salsa for everyone to enjoy. Bonus? We had two jars left over for ourselves!

We promoted our next show as well: a Shoestring Showcase at Shaika Cafe this Thursday.

Hope to see you there!

i’ve got you.

Check out this new music video for Brian Rose! The song is I’ve Got You from Cats and Mice [2008].

The video was recorded by yours truly at Shoestring Studios, starring Patrick Purrswayze and Eugene Bazorov.

Enjoy!

the updates.

I feel pretty clever right now!  I added an events listing on this website along with a discography.  Check them out.

I’ve been working on re-working Simple Fruit for my next album, 18.93 Metres of my Fibre.  It’s been a lot of fun, but it’s also been pretty hard work without much of note.  I’m also daydreaming about a piano solo right on that bridge.

It’s funny how un-romantic recording music is.  It’s mostly just a cabaret of soul-crushing recordings that are just not good enough until you hit on something that may not be exactly what you’re dreaming of, but it’s close enough to authentic that you can ride with it.  Take, for instance, the recording of Simple Fruit that I have on this website currently.  It’s a fairly good recording, but my throat was sore and I was nervous about singing that song, so my vocals just aren’t right.  They’re not strong enough.  So I’m re-doing it, and I’m probably going to publish a very similar version of the song on this site with piano and call it done – an excellent exercise in eliminating hubris, no?

Speaking of which, I need to practise my glockenspiel.  Please!  Check out my events listing and come visit me at Le Pastel on Rachel E. on the 26th of July.
